Is it time to vent? And we’re not talking about venting about your boss, or the government. (We hear enough of that already!) We’re talking about properly venting your roof.

It’s essential to properly ventilate your roof. Here are four reasons.

  • Controls moisture: When you properly ventilate your roof, moisture won’t build up in your attic and your roof. It prevents mold, mildew, rot, and a whole host of other moisture-related problems from cropping up.
  • Supports fire safety: Proper ventilation prevents flammable gasses from building up in your attic, which reduces the risk of fires.
  • Helps your roof last longer: When we build roofs, we like to see them last as long as possible. When you properly vent, your roof lasts longer because moisture won’t build up on the underside of your roof causing damage.
  • Keeps you comfortable: Well-ventilated roofs are less hot and humid in the summer. They’re also less cold in the winter. In colder climates like Bismarck and Mandan, ridge vents (pictured above) are generally the most popular. They allow warm, moist air that arises to escape from the attic space without allowing cold air to enter.

There are downsides to ridge vents though. Like if the vent doesn’t have a filter, then snow, rain, insects or small debris can get inside your attic.

It’s important to have a professional inspect your roof and recommend any improvements to ventilation. Reach out to us to take a look at your roof.
